California Design Store Goes Green

Venice Beach, California
March 2, 2005
– Beginning on St. Patrick's Day, ORGANIC Interior Design will go green in a whole new way.

Organic will unveil a new line of environmentally-sustainable products including linens, draperies, bath towels and interior paint from Anna Sova Organics. The design store will also showcase environmentally-sustainable fabrics, and mattresses, as well as the firm's own custom-designed sustainable sofa.

Kelly LaPlante, Organic's principal designer, believes that environmentally-sustainable home furnishings are the newest way to live a green lifestyle.

"Going green has never been more luxurious," LaPlante said. "That's because organic products have really evolved. Some very ingenious designers have created fabrics and furnishings that are plush and elegant."

The design team at Organic spent months searching for the most beautiful earth-friendly interiors. "Now that we've found these materials, we can't wait for people to discover them," she said.

LaPlante is available for interviews, and she is knowledgeable about the impact non-sustainable interiors have on the environment. She is experienced answering questions, demonstrating her design skills, and able to give tips for a "how to" story.

On St. Patrick's Day, 50% of the day's sales will be donated to Heal the Bay, a local non-profit environmental organization dedicated to making
Santa MonicaBay and Southern California coastal water healthy.

That evening, Leaf Cuisine, the local all-organic and raw restaurant, has partnered with Organic, and will host a "tasting for donations" station at the store.

There will also be a reception in the evening from
5 p.m.
to
10 p.m.
featuring live music, organic food and drink, and hourly raffles of organic products.  Shopping will remain open throughout the day and evening.

Who says childbirth has to be painful?

Studies show that nine out of ten first-time mothers are afraid of giving birth and worried about the pain. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Childbirth educator Sheri Menelli has discovered that hearing childbirth “horror stories” can have a profoundly negative effect on pregnant women’s birth experiences. When fear and anxiety about childbirth are passed from woman to woman, these intense emotions create additional stress for the mother and baby. Doctors call this the “Fear/Tension/Pain” cycle.

Menelli set out to collect inspiring stories of successful labor and delivery experiences to help calm women’s fears. “With so much negative media about birth, it is time to bring back positive stories,” Menelli said. “The culture of fear surrounding childbirth in the U.S. is shifting, and women are eager to share their wonderful birth experiences.”

Menelli’s just-published book, Journey into Motherhood: Inspirational Stories of Natural Birth (White Heart Publishing, November 2004), offers a collection of 48 true stories of natural birth, told in the mothers’ own voices. As diverse as the women who wrote them, the stories include hospital births, home births, unassisted births, emergency deliveries, births attended by young siblings, outdoor births and more.

These stories describe the strategies and tools that can make birth a much better experience. Journey into Motherhood is filled with proven techniques to help women have a powerful and positive childbirth, including:

• How women can experience painless labor

• Insights and advice from mothers who’ve been there

• Options for easing labor and delivery—including yoga, doulas, hypnosis and water birth

• A resource guide to childbirth classes, magazines, websites and audios/videos

“What a fabulous book. All women and girls need to hear these stories and know, really know, that natural birth is full of magnificent, life-changing wisdom,” said Christiane Northrup, M.D., author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause.

Sheri Menelli has dedicated her career to the education and empowerment of pregnant women. As a certified HypnoBirthing educator, she taught hundreds of couples how to have an easier, more comfortable birth. Sheri previously produced and co-hosted a San Diego radio show, "The Real Side of Birth.” She also authored and produced two guided meditation CDs: Light Meditation and Breastfeeding Meditation. A San Diego County resident, Sheri has one daughter and is expecting her second child.

Acclaim for Journey into Motherhood

by Sheri Menelli

“What a fabulous book. All women and girls need to hear these stories and know, really know, that natural birth is full of magnificent, life-changing wisdom.”

—Christiane Northrup, MD, author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause

“In today’s maternity care climate of soaring rates of labor inductions, epidurals, and cesarean deliveries, these inspiring stories of natural childbirth show that childbirth can and should be safe, empowering and beautiful.  All pregnant women, especially those who have been frightened by or resigned to medically managed birth. . . , should read this book.”

— Penny Simkin, founder of DONA and co-author of When Survivors Give Birth: Understanding and Healing the Effects of Early Sexual Abuse on Childbearing Women

Journey Into Motherhoodis a required read for all of my first-time moms.

Sheri Menelli has collected an amazing array of normal birth stories. The common theme to each story is that the birthing woman is the central figure. She birthed in the way that seemed best to her with the love and support of those around her.

These women share tips and techniques that worked for them and assisted them in having the best birth possible. They are powerful women with powerful stories that can touch the lives of all birthing women. Sheri has included an extensive resource list that should prove helpful to all families, regardless of their choice in birth.”

—Gerri L. Ryan, Licensed Midwife

Journey into Motherhood is very informative, with valuable tips and advice from each mother after her story. It has created an inspirational foundation, motivation and a deeper understanding of home birth and natural birth….I highly recommend it.”

After 30 years of tree hugging, and receiving the earth's bounty through growing and eating fruits and nuts, North is hoping that his organic religion will help to re-instill faith into fallen believers and non-believers, alike.

North's book Getting Started in Organic Gardening for Fun and Profit was inspired by his 30-year open relationship with Mother Earth; she has been a mother, a lover, and a goddess guiding him in his spiritual journey through life, channeling him to communion with body, spirit and surroundings. After years of communication through intimate whispers from soil, wind and water, North is cultivating this Holy Communion; North's book is calling for disciples to share in the glory of his awakening.

Natural Manufacturers Switch to Green Power

July 21, 2004 Dozens of natural product manufactures are joining the Environmental Protection Agency?s (EPA) voluntary Green Power Partnership and switching to green power (see attached Fact Sheet).  Green Power is electricity generated by renewable energy sources including, but not limited to, solar, wind, water, and geothermal.  Companies that make green power commitments help the EPA standardize green power procurement and demonstrate sustainable business objectives that encourage active environmental participation of other like-minded businesses.  In the case of Choice Organic Teas/Granum Inc., their purchase of 100% wind energy for their Seattle facilities will prevent 160,920 lbs of Co2, a key greenhouse gas from entering the earth?s atmosphere this year. According to climate control experts, the environmental benefit of Choice Organic Teas? annual commitment is equal to planting more than 19 acres of forest, not burning 48 tons of coal, or not driving 180,957 miles.

Learn more about the Green Power Partnership and/or participating companies by visiting http://www.epa.gov/greenpower or opening the attached EPA Fact Sheet.  Find out more about Choice Organic Teas at: http://www.choiceorganicteas.com/

Jay North’s new book “Getting Started In Organic Gardening For Fun and Profit” brings a whole new meaning to growing your business.

While most organic farming books are specifically targeted toward either beginners or professionals and load the reader up with a wheelbarrow of information that even the best tilled soil would have a tough time absorbing, this book is almost the exact opposite. Not only does it deliver priceless information to help any level organic farmer get the most out of their farm, but Jay North writes in an easy-to-read and entertaining way that delivers all the vital information while keeping it light, fun and entertaining – just the way organic farming should be.

Very often, topic-specific books like this one become too mired in detail and lose focus on the overall joy of the subject at hand. Not this book. In fact, the advice, tips and resources Mr. North gives are specific enough to give readers a very clear point from which to conduct more detailed research, yet we are never bogged down in a quagmire of excessive or needless detail. This makes for an upbeat, speedy read with a staggering amount of easily accessible information dispersed throughout the book. Perhaps the sweetest treat is how the author shares decades of valuable experience and tips for new and experienced farmers alike, pouring out his passion for organic faming – a fast growing multi-billion dollar industry for which he has become one of the world’s leading experts. From selecting, buying and planting seeds to the eventual retail and wholesale marketing of your final organically grown products, everything is covered in as much detail as it needs to be, with many excellent tips coming from decades of experience by one of the world’s leading organic farming experts.

Overall, “Getting Started In Organic Gardening For Fun And Profit” not only delivers on how to generate the fun and profits, but whether you’re just starting out with a small community farm or a seasoned professional looking to expand your business, consider this book your treasure map to the land of organic plenty.

People interested in ordering a copy of Getting Started in Organic Gardening for Fun and Profit can do so by going directly to North’s web site www.goingorganic.com

SIX COLLEGES FORM THE ECO-LEAGUE

A new consortium of six small environmentally-focused liberal arts colleges, the Eco-League, will share resources and students on campuses from Maine to Alaska.  The League begins operations this fall with a student exchange program that enables a seamless transfer of credits, costs, and financial aid to any other member school.  It is, in effect, a domestic study abroad model offering diverse geographic and educational experiences.  The new partnership will offer students from Alaska Pacific University (Anchorage, AK), Antioch College (Yellow Springs, OH), Green Mountain College (Poultney, VT), Northland College (Ashland, WI), Prescott College (Prescott, AZ) and College of the Atlantic (Bar Harbor, ME) the opportunity spend up to two semesters studying at any of the other member colleges.

Another key component of The Eco-League partnership will be the sharing and combining of faculty resources.  There will be scientific collaborations, conferences, symposia, and exchanges of faculty members, all of which are intended to help faculty continue their scholarship and to provide them with colleagues who are trying to solve the same kinds of complex problems.  "I believe that when you take the faculties of these six institutions and put them together, you will have more environmental expertise in one collection than you could get at any institution in the country Šand probably in the world," offered Bill Throop, Provost of Green Mountain College.

Steve Katona, President of the College of the Atlantic, continues.  "We don¹t know all the answers to the environmental crises affecting our world, but we sure do know the questions and the problems."

In an educational era of rising costs and increased competition for students, The Eco-League has an inescapable air of practicality about it. Ultimately, the strength in numbers born of a six-fold sharing students, faculty and resources will be as pleasing to College Presidents and Provosts as it is to those keen to learn.  Additionally, the partnership was specifically designed not to burden students with multiple financial arrangements: tuition (including room and board) is paid to directly to the parent school, regardless of Eco-League destination(s).  Central to The Eco-League¹s academic design is that it is intended to benefit and expand any liberal arts degree in history, science, business or any other.

Though expansion of educational opportunity will certainly be a draw for students, one of the most dramatic academic advantages inherent in The Eco-League is the flexibility it allows faculty members to travel, instruct and study in diverse settings. "Say you have one or two geologists in a college," explains Karen Halbersleben, President of Northland College. "With the creation of the Eco-League, you suddenly have a geology department with ten faculty members or more."

"And they [faculty members] don¹t duplicate each other, they multiply each other because they are all in different environments and they have different specialties," offered Joan Straumanis, President of Antioch College.

"If you were to look across these institutions, they would represent a broad range of ecosystems available in North America," adds Dan Garvey, President of Prescott College.  "From a political perspective, they represent a wide array of political persuasions, and finally, from a social perspective, you really have a wonderful cornucopia of societies and people."

Doug North, President of Alaska Pacific University, sees The Eco-League as a way to, in the end, produce better citizens. "Isn¹t that what college is all aboutŠexpanding horizons and thinking beyond oneself?  This inclination is at the heart of the partnership."

"There have been academic cooperative programs before, of course, but The Eco-League is the first to focus on education for environmental sustainability," offered Steve Katona.  "Our world needs it and the students want it.  It was a natural from the very beginning."

World Fair Trade Day, May 8th

Choice Organic Teas Backs Student Initiatives

Seattle, WA – April 22, 2004 – CHOICE ORGANIC TEAS advocates for Fair Trade by reaching out to student groups that are organizing events for the third annual World Fair Trade Day on May 8th.  Student organizations from colleges and universities across the nation are hosting events to promote Fair Trade and lobby their schools to serve Fair Trade certified products in campus cafes and food-service venues.  CHOICE ORGANIC TEAS is assisting student groups by donating Fair Trade Certified tea to campuses for their World Fair Trade Day celebrations and by providing literature explaining the benefits of purchasing Fair Trade Certified tea.

A brand of Granum, Inc., CHOICE ORGANIC TEAS was created to speak to a passion for the earth as well as a compassion for the people who inhabit it.  Since becoming the first tea-crafter in the United States to Fair Trade certify many of their teas, CHOICE ORGANIC TEAS has been increasing consumer awareness of the benefits of making socially conscious purchases.  By assisting student efforts, CHOICE ORGANIC TEAS advances the Fair Trade business model.  “Student organization and enthusiasm for Fair Trade demonstrates concern for working conditions in developing nations,” explains Blake Rankin, founder and President of Granum, Inc.  “We proudly support their efforts.”  CHOICE ORGANIC TEAS commends student Fair Trade initiatives and encourages further nationwide participation by groups and individuals concerned with fair wages and quality of life around the world.
